You pull into a station off Prospect Avenue or Veterans Parkway, reach for the nozzle, and there are more buttons than you remembered. Regular 87. Something labeled 88. Something labeled E85. A black-and-orange sticker on the pump face with the word “Attention” running across the corner. And behind you, someone waiting.
Most drivers make that decision in about ten seconds, based on price and a hunch. That is a shame, because the pump is actually telling you exactly what you need to know. Once you learn to read it, and once you know where your own vehicle states what it is approved to run, the whole question stops being a guess.
Here is the plain version for Champaign-Urbana and Bloomington-Normal drivers: which blends exist, which one your car is approved for, what changes you should expect, and what symptoms are worth bringing to a shop.
Why Central Illinois Pumps Offer More Than One Blend
We live in the middle of corn country, so it is no accident that our stations carry blends a driver in another part of the country might never see. Nationally, E15 is sold at just over 3,000 stations across 31 states. Here it is easy to find.
Illinois also got a regulatory change that made it easier. At the request of the governors of eight Midwest states, the EPA allowed year-round E15 sales in Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, South Dakota, and Wisconsin, with an effective date of April 28, 2025. Before that, the summer months were the complicated part of the calendar for E15. Now the button is there in July the same as it is in January.
So the question is not whether you will see these blends. You will. The question is which one your specific vehicle is approved to take.
How to Read the Sticker on the Pump
That orange-and-black label is not a marketing decoration. It is federally required, and its wording is specified down to the line breaks.
An E15 dispenser label reads:
Attention / E15 / Up To 15% Ethanol / Use only in / • 2001 And Newer Passenger Vehicles / • Flex-fuel vehicles / Don’t use in other vehicles, boats, or gasoline-powered equipment.
It measures roughly three and a half inches across, with orange lettering on black up top and black lettering on orange below. It is designed to be noticed at arm’s length while you are standing there with the nozzle in your hand.
A few translations:
- E15 means gasoline blended with 10.5% to 15% ethanol, which is how the EPA defines it.
- The 88 on the button is an octane rating, not an ethanol percentage. Ethanol has a higher octane number than gasoline, which is why a 15% blend often posts 88 where the E10 next to it posts 87. Higher octane on that button does not mean the fuel is approved for your car. The label decides that, not the number.
- E85, sometimes just called flex fuel, contains 51% to 83% ethanol depending on the season and the region. It is for flexible fuel vehicles only and is not approved for gasoline-only models. Because the ethanol content moves around, retailers are allowed to post either the exact content or that 51-to-83-percent range on the label.
Read the sticker before the price. It takes two seconds and it is the only thing at the pump that is legally obligated to be accurate about your vehicle.
Is E15 Gas Safe for My Car? Where the Answer Actually Lives
This is the question we get most often, and it deserves a real answer rather than a shrug.
The EPA approved E15 in 2011 for light-duty conventional vehicles of model year 2001 and newer, after testing funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. Flex fuel vehicles are approved as well. So for the large majority of cars, crossovers, and light trucks in a Champaign or Bloomington driveway today, the federal approval is already in place.
But federal approval is the floor, not the whole story. Your manufacturer has its own guidance, and that is where you should finish the check. Three places to look, in order:
- The fuel door or filler area. Many vehicles carry a small label right there stating the acceptable fuels or minimum octane. It is the fastest check and you are already standing next to it.
- The owner’s manual. The fuel section states plainly which fuels the vehicle accepts. If the manual is long gone from the glovebox, manufacturers post them online.
- The manufacturer’s website or a call to us. If the first two are ambiguous, do not split the difference with a guess.
What does not count as a check: the age of the car by feel, the size of the engine, what a neighbor runs in a similar truck, or the assumption that a newer vehicle must accept everything. Two vehicles in the same driveway can have two different answers.
That last part matters more here than you might think. Plenty of households in McLean and Champaign counties keep a newer daily driver alongside an older pickup for hauling and weekend work. A 1998 pickup is a conventional pre-2001 vehicle, so E15 is off the table for it, even though the 2019 crossover parked beside it is fine.
What Flex Fuel Actually Means
A flexible fuel vehicle, or FFV, has an ordinary internal combustion engine that has been built to tolerate gasoline or any blend of gasoline and ethanol up to 83%. These are not rare. As of 2022 there were more than 20.9 million of them on U.S. roads, and quite a few of their owners have no idea they are driving one.
How to tell:
- A yellow gas cap. Most manufacturers started using them on FFVs as of model year 2008, and General Motors started in 2006.
- A yellow ring around the nozzle opening on vehicles with capless filler systems.
- Badging on the tailgate or fender reading E85, Flex-Fuel, or FFV.
- Markings on the fuel door.
- The owner’s manual, which is the tiebreaker whenever the badges have been removed or repainted.
One correction we make regularly at the counter: a yellow gas cap does not mean premium. It means flex fuel. Those are entirely different claims, and confusing them sends people down the wrong aisle of the pump.
If your vehicle is not an FFV, E85 is not an option for it at any octane, in any season, at any price. Putting it in is misfueling, and no amount of good intentions makes the engine management system able to handle that much ethanol.
What Is Off Limits, and It Is Not Just Cars
The prohibited list for E15 is longer than most drivers realize, and it catches a lot of central Illinois garages:
- All motorcycles
- All vehicles with heavy-duty engines, such as school buses and delivery trucks
- All off-road vehicles, including boats and snowmobiles
- All engines in off-road equipment, including chainsaws and gasoline lawn mowers
- All conventional vehicles older than model year 2001
Two everyday scenarios come straight out of that list. The first is the gas can. You are already at the pump, the can is in the trunk, and the mower and the chainsaw need filling. Small engines are on the prohibited list, so that can needs to be filled from the E10 hose, not the E15 one.
The second is the boat. If you are trailering out to Clinton Lake for the weekend, marine engines are excluded from E15 regardless of model year. Fuel your tow vehicle by its own label and fuel the boat by its own rules.
Stations selling E15 are required to have a misfueling mitigation plan in place to reduce the risk of pre-2001 vehicles filling up with it. That is a real safeguard, but it is a backstop. The person who knows what is in your driveway and on your trailer is you.
Fuel Economy: What Is Normal After You Switch Blends
Ethanol carries less energy per gallon than gasoline. Denatured ethanol contains about 30% less energy per gallon than gasoline, and engines are generally optimized for gasoline, so fuel economy tends to slip a little as the ethanol percentage climbs.
The clearest illustration is E85 in a flex fuel vehicle: those vehicles typically get about 15% to 27% fewer miles per gallon on E85 than on gasoline. Interestingly, many FFVs also show better acceleration on higher ethanol blends, which is the tradeoff in the other direction.
The practical takeaway is that the number on the big sign by the road is not the whole comparison. Miles per tank matter as much as the price per gallon, and the honest way to compare is to track a few tanks of each and see what your own commute produces. We are not going to print a cost comparison here, because fuel prices and service prices both move. Also worth knowing: a modest change in your trip computer’s average after a blend switch is expected behavior, not a fault. A sudden, sharp drop that does not settle down is a different story, and that one belongs in the next section.
What Actually Fouls a Fuel System, and It Is Not the Number on the Button
Here is where most articles on this subject go wrong. They treat every fuel system complaint as an ethanol problem. In our bays, the bigger variable is detergency, which is a separate property of the fuel entirely.
TOP TIER is a fuel performance standard written by auto manufacturers themselves, created because automakers cannot dictate fuel regulations on their own and wanted a way to point customers toward fuel that keeps engines cleaner. AAA’s testing found that non-TOP TIER gasolines caused 19 times more engine deposits than TOP TIER brands after just 4,000 miles. AAA also found that excessive carbon deposits reduce fuel economy, increase emissions, and hurt vehicle performance, particularly on newer vehicles, and that rough idling or hesitation on acceleration can often be resolved after a few thousand miles of running TOP TIER fuel.
Read that again, because it reframes the whole conversation: the deposits driving the symptoms people blame on ethanol correlate with the detergent package in the gasoline, not with the blend number on the button. Choosing an approved blend and choosing well-detergent-treated fuel are two separate good decisions, and you can make both at most stations around here.
When deposits do get ahead of the fuel, that is what fuel system cleaning and injector service address. Injectors are precision sprayers. When their spray pattern degrades, the engine gets an uneven, poorly atomized dose of fuel, and the driver feels it as a stumble, a hesitation, or a mileage slide long before anything actually fails. Symptoms Worth Bringing to a Shop
Normal after a blend switch: a small change in average mpg, and nothing else.
Worth an appointment:
- A check engine light, whether it is steady or flashing. A flashing one means stop driving and call us.
- A rough idle or a stumble at a stoplight on Neil Street that was not there last month.
- Hesitation on acceleration, especially merging onto I-74 or I-57.
- Hard starting, particularly a long crank before the engine catches.
- A fuel smell in or around the vehicle. This one is not a wait-and-see item.
- A sharp, unexplained drop in fuel economy that does not settle after a couple of tanks.
- Fuel that has been sitting for months, in a project car, a seasonal vehicle, or a piece of equipment that skipped a season.
Any one of these is a diagnostic conversation, not a guess-and-replace-parts exercise. Fuel delivery, ignition, and sensor faults can all produce the same complaint from the driver’s seat, which is exactly why guessing is expensive.
Get a Straight Answer in Champaign or Bloomington
The short version of all of this: the pump label tells you what a fuel is approved for, your owner’s manual and fuel door tell you what your vehicle is approved to run, flex fuel means an actual FFV and not just a yellow cap, and the symptoms that deserve a shop are the ones your car did not have last month.
